Relationship: Klaus & Elijah (for favoriteconsequence)
The relationship between Klaus and Elijah is my favorite out of all the Originals. There are just so many layers to it. I feel like when Niklaus was first born Elijah was very much his primary care giver, as much as a four or five year old can care for a newborn that is. I can assume that Esther’s guilt over being unfaithful to her husband was unconsciously taken out on her infant son from the moment he took his first breath.
I can see her taking Elijah aside, handing him an infant Niklaus wrapped in soft furs and telling him, “It is your job to care for him now, you must watch over him.” I can imagine that has been the only absolute truth that Elijah has ever really known.
That it is his job to watch over Niklaus.
I imagine all the things Klaus first learned as a child he learned from Elijah. He most likely taught him how to properly use a sword as well as how to read and write. For some reason I can see Mikael thinking it unnecessary for Klaus to be educated when he may have opted to seek out education for his other sons.
I see Elijah taking it upon himself to teach Niklaus (I can also imagine him including Rebekah in these lessons, regardless of the fact that women were not seen as needing education in those days either) I see him teaching them about the arts of war and philosophy as well as the power of honor and integrity (since I’m assuming these are qualities that have always been a part of who Elijah is)
I can picture them sitting for hours listening to Elijah tell them stories and fables, Niklaus soaking up the attention that he never gets from anyone else and Rebekah relishing in the chance to be treated like an equal.
I’m sure Klaus went to Elijah with all his questions and uncertainties. Those things you’d ask your parents. Someone you trust. An advisor.
I can see them as probably having a secret place. A hide out. Somewhere they’d go to get away from their father’s rage. Somewhere to hide. In my head they took Tatia there in later years. I can imagine that after her death while Niklaus was ripping their mother’s heart from her chest, Elijah carried Tatia to this place and buried her there.
I think Klaus’ initial interest in Tatia probably stemmed from the fact that Elijah was interested in her. It’s just another example of him wanting to have, control and possess all things in the lives of the people closest to him.
He never wants them to have anything of their own, something he’s not a part of. It’s similar to the situation with Rebekah and Stefan. Rebekah fell for Stefan and in part Klaus did as well. I think in this particular situation Klaus just found himself getting caught up. Caught in the ‘allure of the Petrova doppelganger’.
But I feel like Tatia was also just a catalyst between them. The two of them are such a whirlwind she simply got caught in the crossfire and she paid for it with her life. She was vaporized between them.
I think as vampires their relationship continued on much like it always had. Elijah as Klaus’ voice of reason. The only one who could make him pause for even a moment and reflect. Elijah was always happy to stand in the shadow if it meant helping Niklaus because in his mind Klaus was always destined for great things.
But I also think they are two powerful opposing forces. In the end Klaus just pushed Elijah till he broke.
I think Klaus is and has always been the most important person in Elijah’s life. He’s always held him most dear and I think that’s part of what fuels a lot of the rage we’ve seen him show towards Klaus. Because what is hatred if not love turned inside out?
Stefan: He’s here.
Elena: You have to go. I need to talk to him alone.
Stefan: Elena…
Elena: Stefan, I’m ok. He can’t come in the house.
Elijah: You know, I might not be able to enter this house… But I’m avery patient man. I’ll wait you out.
